You Want to Quit Your Job, But You Can’t

You Want to Quit Your Job, But You Can’t

I quit my job to go after my entrepreneurial dream 6 years ago.  I write about that day here.  I often think about this day, but I don’t think about the thought process that helped me get there enough. It’s that thought process that’s now sustaining me.

I shut down the first business I started 3 years after I quit my job.  Since then I’ve thought about going back to the 9 to 5 consistent paycheck life multiple times.  The main reason I haven’t gone back to that life is that my new way of thinking changed what I want out of my life’s work.

So if you want to quit your job, and for whatever reasons you can’t, you must change the way you think.  If you can change the way you think, you can change your life.  Here are the ways I went about changing my thoughts:

  1. Podcast – I stopped listening to music during my commute to work and became very deliberate about listening to podcast that helped me learn.  The one podcast in particular that influenced me the most was “This Week In Startups” hosted by Jason Calacanis.  I recommend that you start with episode 1 and progress in ascending order.  That’s what I did and using this method allowed me to understand the later episodes much better that I would have if I listened in descending order.
  2. Running While Listening to Motivational Speakers – I started running 5 days a week leading up to the time I quit my job.  I started with 10 minute runs and worked my way up to 6 mile 60 minute runs.  I didn’t just run however, while I ran I always listened to motivational speakers.  The speaker I listened to most often was Dr. Eric Thomas.
  3. Reading – I read daily as part of my routine.  I write about the books I completed around the time before I quit my job here.  6 years later, I still recommend these books and one other – The Baron Son.  I read The Baron Son about 7 years before I quit my job.  However, this book influenced me the most in starting me on the path to change my thinking.

If you have a burning desire to quit your job to go after your entrepreneurial dream, but find yourself thinking you can’t,  reach out to me and let’s figure out a plan to get you to take action.
